Game Story

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Juan Pierre did a little more than set the table in Game Two. Pierre had four hits, including a wind-blown two-run double into the right field corner that snapped a sixth-inning tie, as the Florida Marlins evened their National League Division Series with a 9-5 triumph over the San Francisco Giants. The Marlins' leadoff hitter and key component to their offense, Pierre was 0-for-4 in a Game One loss but made an immediate impact in this one. He singled and scored in the first, fifth and eighth innings and delivered the decisive blow in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Pierre pulled a long fly ball into the tricky corner at Pacific Bell Park. As the ball kept drifting, Jose Cruz, Jr. got his cleats caught on the warning track. The ball bounced high off the track and off the wall, allowing Jeff Conine and Alex Gonzalez to score. "I was just trying to relax and put the pressure on the pitcher," said Pierre, who hit just one homer in 668 at-bats during the season. "The ball started 10 feet foul and the wind helped it. I was just hoping for a sac fly, but I saw him slip. Most of my fly balls don't carry that far. I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere." Giants manager Felipe Alou is aware of how hard it will be to prevent Pierre from having an impact. "It would be great to keep him off base, but it is going to be a very difficult task to do," Alou said. "He's a guy that got over 200 hits. He hits to all fields. ... He's going to get on. He's going to get his hits. We just have to control his running." Cruz's inability to come up with Pierre's fly ball was just one in a series of defensive mishaps by the usually sure-handed Giants, who committed two errors but misplayed at least three balls. "It was tough out there today," Cruz said. "I've never seen the conditions like that. There were a lot of tough plays out there today. It's the worst day I've experienced out there in right. It was a difficult wind. Shadows. Fog. I don't think we've played in conditions like that here before. There is a patch right next to the warning track and it was muddy. I stepped there, planted to catch it, and slipped. I thought I would have caught it if I hadn't slipped." It was an uncharacteristic defensive lapse for a team that set franchise standards for fielding percentage and fewest errors in a season. "We didn't get it done defensively," said San Francisco center fielder Marquis Grissom, who dropped and kicked a ball himself. "No doubt about it." Trailing 9-5 in the eighth, San Francisco tried to rally against rookie lefthander Dontrelle Willis, who allowed back-to-back one-out singles. But Braden Looper came on and easily retired Grissom and Cruz to preserve the lead. Ugueth Urbina cruised through the ninth, capping a stellar performance by Florida's bullpen. Six relievers combined to allow a run and two hits after starter Brad Penny lasted just four innings. Chad Fox (1-0), the fourth Marlins' pitcher, tossed two hitless innings and got the win. Joe Nathan (0-1), who took over for starter Sidney Ponson in the sixth, was tagged for three runs and four hits while retiring just one batter. The series heads to Florida for the next two games, beginning Friday. San Francisco sends veteran lefthander Kirk Rueter to the mound and Florida counters with southpaw Mark Redman. "We're tied 1-1, there are two good teams, playing hard, in the playoffs," Bonds said. "No one is going to lay down. We both want to go to the next round. They played well and gained confidence. We aren't taking anyone lightly." "We showed them a little something that as a team. We're not afraid of them," Marlins utility player Lenny Harris said. "We're going back to South Florida, and that's where we play our best baseball." Pierre, who this season became one of just five players in the last 80 years to record 200 hits and 60 stolen bases, was overmatched by San Francisco starter Jason Schmidt in the series opener. Against the more hittable Ponson, Pierre got Florida off to a quick start. He and Luis Castillo opened with singles and, after a wild pitch, a groundout by Derrek Lee put Florida ahead for the first time in the series. "I told our offense we were going to get something going in the first," Pierre said. "Our hitters got some pitches to hit and it carried over for the rest of the game. I got the opportunity to score some runs and to drive in some runs." San Francisco got even in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Barry Bonds and took a 4-1 lead in the fourth when Edgardo Alfonzo doubled home two runs and scored on a groundout by Grissom. Pierre keyed a comeback in the fourth as he had an RBI single to right, Castillo a run-scoring groundout and Ivan Rodriguez a bloop base hit that tied the game, 4-4. "I think they were confident that they were going to get us again," Pierre said. "But then we got guys on, guys moving around, beating them with hits, singles and doubles, do what we do, put the pressure on them." "We did our job, we got on base and we got a lot of hits," Rodriguez said. "We were just swinging the bats and we hit it. Today we came out ready to go. It was a big win." Rick Helling took over for Florida in the fifth but allowed a triple to pinch hitter Pedro Feliz and a run-scoring single to Snow. Florida jumped on Joe Nathan in the sixth as Juan Encarnacion homered with one out. Singles by Jeff Conine, Alex Gonzalez and Harris loaded the bases. Jason Christiansen came on for Nathan and surrendered Pierre's double. The Marlins cashed in on an error by Gold Glove first baseman J.T. Snow in the seventh and made it 8-5 in the eighth when Grissom had a line drive to center field bounce off his glove.
